Leeds United Close In on Third Summer Signing After Return to Premier League
Leeds United are on the verge of securing their third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Lukas Nmecha and Jaka Bijol, as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s side sealed promotion in dramatic fashion, winning the Championship title on the final day of the 2024/25 season.
Despite a few stumbles along the way, Leeds were the most consistent team across the campaign and earned their place back in the top flight.
However, with the Premier League representing a significant step up in quality, Leeds know their squad needs major strengthening to survive at this level.
Farke, who previously endured two difficult spells in the Premier League with Norwich City, was initially at risk of being replaced despite guiding Leeds to promotion.
Ultimately, the club opted to stick with the 48-year-old and are now backing him with a considerably larger transfer budget.
Having already wrapped up deals for forward Lukas Nmecha and centre-back Jaka Bijol, Leeds are now poised to add Sebastiaan Bornauw from Wolfsburg to their ranks.
According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, the deal for Bornauw is “considered a done deal,” with the 26-year-old Belgian defender expected to sign a contract at Elland Road until 2029. The transfer fee is reported to be up to €6 million.
Plettenberg shared on X:
“Sebastiaan Bornauw to Leeds United is considered a done deal. All done and sealed with VfL Wolfsburg. The 26 y/o centre-back will sign a contract until 2029, with the transfer fee up to €6m. Announcement soon. #LUFC.”
Bornauw, who has been capped four times by Belgium, has made nearly 100 Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg and is seen as a strong addition to Leeds’ defensive line.
With his current contract set to expire in 2026, the German club is willing to sell him now for a reasonable fee.
Sky Sports has reported that the Belgian international has completed his medical at Leeds. The club is expected to pay around £5.13 million (€6 million), and Bornauw is set to sign a four-year contract.
Meanwhile, Leeds are also managing outgoing players. Junior Firpo is set to leave on a free transfer and is likely to return to La Liga, with Real Betis leading the race for his signature.
Josuha Guilavogui is also expected to depart, while the club remains in talks with academy graduate Sam Byram, whose contract has also expired, over a possible new deal.
