Everton star Amadou Onana played the full 90 minutes as Belgium drew 0-0 against Ukraine in Euro 2024 on Wednesday (26 June). This result allowed the Red Devils to progress to the knockout stages, while Toffees teammate Vitaliy Mykolenko’s Ukraine team was eliminated after finishing bottom of Group E.
Despite advancing, Belgian newspaper De Morgen [26 June] described the match as “disappointing,” with Belgium failing to finish above Romania in the group standings. Walfoot [26 June] criticized Onana’s midfield performance, giving him a 4/10 rating and noting, “Lining up Tielemans and Onana worked very well against Romania, but this time, Amadou played far too high at times. How can so many spaces be created in a midfield where he is supposed to reign supreme?”

Belgium, with their talent and calibre, are expected to top their group at the European Championship, including Toffees star Onana, who has played in midfield for all three games so far. The 22-year-old has drawn significant attention since joining Everton two summers ago, making 72 appearances as one of Sean Dyche’s key midfielders.
Given this, many teams are monitoring Onana’s situation at the club this summer, especially after his candid comments about trying to impress at Euro 2024. However, Everton appears open to a move for Onana in the summer transfer market, and his poor performance against Ukraine will not benefit either party [The Mirror].
Onana should get another chance to impress as Belgium advances to face Kylian Mbappe’s France in the next round. He will need to be at his best if Belgium hopes to progress further in the competition.
