Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United, is reportedly growing frustrated with the lack of progress in securing a transfer to Old Trafford. The England international is considered one of the top defensive targets for the Red Devils this summer, but his high valuation has stalled any potential deal.
Everton are said to value Branthwaite similarly to Harry Maguire and Josko Gvardiol, seeking around £80 million, though a deal might be possible for closer to £70 million. Manchester United’s initial bid was just £35 million, potentially rising to £43 million with add-ons, which Everton promptly rejected. With United working with a starting budget of only £50 million, a deal appears unlikely for now.
According to The Mirror, the lack of movement has left the 22-year-old Branthwaite extremely frustrated, as he hopes to join United before the 2024-25 season. However, Everton, having tied Branthwaite to a new contract until 2027, are in no hurry to sell him cheaply.
Despite needing to raise funds, Everton have already generated over £20 million through the sales of Ben Godfrey to Atalanta BC and Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Amadou Onana could also be sold for significant fees. Given Everton’s firm stance on Branthwaite’s valuation, Manchester United have reportedly shifted their focus to Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt, who could be available for around £40 million.
While De Ligt presents a cheaper and more experienced option, United still have their eye on Branthwaite, who scored three goals in 35 Premier League matches last season. Branthwaite could soon have a strong connection at United, as Ruud van Nistelrooy, his former coach at PSV Eindhoven, is set to join Erik ten Hag’s staff.
However, unless Everton significantly reduce their asking price or agree to a swap or part-exchange deal, Branthwaite is likely to remain at Goodison Park this summer.
