Everton midfielder Lewis Warrington has announced his departure from the club this summer, ending a 15-year association with the Toffees. On 15 July, Warrington posted a message on X expressing gratitude to the staff who supported him throughout his career on Merseyside after progressing through the youth ranks.

The 21-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, but an injury cut his loan short in January, and his contract at Goodison Park expired this summer. Warrington leaves alongside Andre Gomes, both on free transfers, while midfielder Amadou Onana is close to a high-value move to Aston Villa.

Warrington’s tenure at his boyhood club has seen a disappointing conclusion over the past two years, despite his apparent readiness for a first-team breakthrough under Frank Lampard. The then-teenager impressed Lampard during the 2022 preseason, earning a new contract amid interest from other clubs.

However, Warrington instead went on a season-long loan to League One side Fleetwood Town, where he was a regular player. He returned to Everton after Lampard’s dismissal and subsequent replacement by Sean Dyche.

An attempted step up to Championship level with Plymouth Argyle was unsuccessful, as an injury limited Warrington to just four appearances in all competitions.

Dyche did grant him his second first-team appearance with a late substitute appearance against Sheffield United on 11 May, but it was clear Warrington was not in Dyche’s long-term plans.

In response to midfield exits, Everton has permanently signed Tim Iroegbunam, also 21, from Aston Villa and is targeting Chelsea’s Lesley Ugochukwu on loan to replace Onana【Foot Mercato, 13 July】. Warrington now seeks a fresh start elsewhere.

In other Everton news, David Ornstein has provided a “hugely substantial” transfer update regarding another player wanted by the Toffees.
