“48-goal striker Callum Wilson drops transfer hint after linking up with Newcastle United in Germany
Callum Wilson is gearing up for his fifth season at Newcastle United, determined to prove his doubters wrong. The 32-year-old striker has scored 48 goals in 108 appearances since joining from AFC Bournemouth for £20 million, making him the Magpies’ second-highest all-time Premier League scorer, behind Alan Shearer.
However, Wilson’s injury history has been a source of frustration, as evidenced by his 25-game absence last season. With his injury record, age—he turns 33 in February—and his contract having only 12 months left, doubts about his future have emerged.
Despite this, there is a growing belief that the England striker will remain with the club this summer. The Magpies needed to sell players last month to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules, achieving this through the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson for a combined £68 million.
Wilson recently posted on social media, expressing his happiness to be back with a “fully charged battery” and a smile emoji. He is currently at Adidas’ global headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, as part of Newcastle’s pre-season programme.
While Newcastle are open to strengthening their attack this summer, keeping Wilson has always been part of Eddie Howe’s plans. Speaking at the end of last season, Howe said, “Of course, I want him at the club next season. I’ll do everything I can to make that happen.
“Write him off at your peril because he comes back time and time again. He’s a very motivated player and wants to do his very best at every moment. I’ve managed him for a very long time now and mentality-wise, I wouldn’t swap him. He’s a monster; he’s got a focus and when he’s got a goal he’ll go for it.”
