Leeds United’s failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League has left them vulnerable to losing their top players.

Teenage talent Archie Gray has already been sold to Tottenham Hotspur, and central midfielder Glen Kamara has transferred to Ligue 1 club Rennes after just one year at Elland Road. Additionally, academy graduate Charlie Cresswell moved to Toulouse earlier this summer, leaving Leeds in search of a suitable replacement for him.

Leeds are now reportedly targeting a deal for versatile defender Anselmo MacNulty from PEC Zwolle before the summer transfer window closes, according to Football Insider. The club has made initial contact with the Dutch side to discuss the potential transfer.

Leeds are looking to add another left-back to their squad, and MacNulty, described as “physically strong” by former Zwolle director Marcel Boudesteyn, is considered a strong candidate. However, Football Insider has not confirmed whether Zwolle is willing to sell the Ireland U21 international or the potential transfer fee.

Securing MacNulty would be crucial for Leeds, as he could effectively replace Cresswell by offering versatile defensive cover. MacNulty’s primary position is central defense, making him a suitable candidate for the left-sided centre-back role. Cresswell was mainly used as a backup in that position last season, and MacNulty could fill a similar role.

Moreover, MacNulty’s ability to play as a left-back adds valuable versatility, allowing him to cover multiple positions. His strong defensive presence in the Eredivisie, including his success in physical duels and reliability in defense, makes him an appealing option for Leeds manager Daniel Farke.

Bringing in MacNulty would help Leeds compensate for the defensive cover lost with Cresswell’s departure to Toulouse.
