Newcastle United have been linked with Lille striker Jonathan David, who has one year remaining on his contract. Jonathan David mentioned earlier this summer that he could be on the move, amid reported interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are among several Premier League clubs eyeing the Canadian goal-scorer, who has netted an impressive 84 goals in four seasons for Lille.
Chelsea and West Ham United are also reportedly interested in acquiring his services. Last summer, Lille reportedly demanded £50 million for the 24-year-old, but with his contract nearing its end, there’s hope for a cut-price deal. A figure around £25 million would appeal to Newcastle’s management as they seek a reliable backup for Alexander Isak. While a centre-back and right-winger remain priorities, there are increasing concerns over Callum Wilson’s fitness, as the England international has sustained another injury, his 14th as a Newcastle player, and may miss the start of the season. David fits the profile they are looking for and could be a key target before the transfer window closes.
Speaking before the Copa America, where he scored two goals, David hinted at a possible summer move. He said: “There’s always a lot of noise. But I’m still here, I’m still at Lille. From there, we’ll see if I end up going back to Lille for preseason or if I’m somewhere else, I don’t know. Things are obviously moving slowly. I think things are going at the right pace. Obviously, I think everyone sees there’s a lot of clubs interested. Right now, I’m still waiting for an offer to be put on the table to Lille. Then, after that, I’ll have to make a choice and make the right choice. Whether it’s to leave, or to stay or what team do I pick, really.”
