Marc Guehi, 24, has been strongly linked with a move away from Crystal Palace following his impressive performances last season. The England international replaced Harry Maguire in Gareth Southgate’s side at Euro 2024, partnering with Man City’s John Stones in central defense.
Despite being linked with a move to United for over a year, it appears Guehi is leaving Palace for another Premier League club. The Athletic reports that Newcastle has started negotiations with Palace for Guehi’s transfer.
According to Sky Sports, Eddie Howe has prioritized signing a center-back this summer, and Guehi fits the profile he is looking for—right-footed but also capable of playing on the left. The report states that Newcastle is the first club to enter ‘meaningful talks’ with the Eagles after making an initial bid earlier this week.
Palace is seeking approximately £65m for Guehi’s transfer, according to the Daily Mail. His potential fee has risen significantly in recent months due to his growing stature in the game. Guehi has two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park.
United have other targets in mind. It is understood that United have verbally agreed on personal terms with two center-backs, but Erik ten Hag is likely to land only one of them. Everton is currently pricing Jarrad Branthwaite out of a move to Old Trafford, while United is in talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for Matthijs de Ligt.
With Yoro out for three months, it’s essential for United to sign a top-quality center-back, even if it means creating competition for Yoro upon his return. Competition is healthy.
