Manchester United’s puzzling decision has jeopardized West Ham’s potential deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, Manchester United has experienced a significant decline, not just in footballing terms, but in various aspects of club management. The mismanagement of the world’s biggest club has often been seen as shambolic.
While it can be entertaining for outsiders, it sometimes affects other teams, such as West Ham. Negotiating transfers with United is notoriously difficult due to their tendency to overvalue players or change their stance at the last moment.
Despite this, West Ham appeared close to finalizing a fee with United for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The Red Devils are eager to offload him to pursue another target, Noussair Mazraoui. You’d expect them to ensure the deal goes through smoothly, including avoiding risks of injury to Wan-Bissaka, but United operates differently.
In a surprising move, United played Wan-Bissaka for 83 minutes in a preseason fixture against Liverpool, a decision journalist Ryan Taylor labeled as “crazy.”
“Aaron Wan-Bissaka played more minutes (83) than any outfield Man Utd player last night in a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool,” Taylor posted on X. “Crazy given the West Ham agreement is close.”
Taylor noted that the decision highlighted how stretched Erik ten Hag’s squad is due to injuries. Wan-Bissaka did suffer minor injuries during the match, raising concerns about the transfer. Fortunately, these injuries are not serious and won’t affect his ability to join West Ham. Nonetheless, it underscores the recklessness of United’s decision to risk playing him.
