“It’s okay to adjust it now; I was supposed to place Tottenham in the TOP…” – Gary Lineker revises his prediction on Tottenham’s final league position just hours before the Leicester match.
Tottenham Hotspur watched as the rest of the Premier League kicked off their campaigns over the weekend, but now it’s their turn.
From Manchester United to Liverpool, the opening weekend saw the top teams performing efficiently without any major upsets. However, there’s potential for a surprise when Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham travels to the Midlands on Monday night to face newly-promoted Leicester City.
Before the season began, predictions were flying, some wilder than others – with Gary Neville controversially predicting Liverpool won’t finish in the top four. Meanwhile, Gary Lineker admitted to making an ‘error’ in his own forecast for Tottenham’s finish this season.
Last season, Tottenham missed out on Champions League football to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa during Postecoglou’s debut season. Despite Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, Spurs earned more points and scored four more goals than the previous season.
Initially, Lineker had predicted that Tottenham would finish fifth again, but hours before the Leicester game, he revised his prediction. He now sees Spurs ‘battling with Liverpool’ for a top-four finish, as he shared on *The Rest is Football* podcast.

“Just a quick note on Leicester and Tottenham,” said Lineker. “When we did our predictions, I made a mistake. It’s okay to correct it now since they haven’t played yet. I originally placed Tottenham fifth, but I meant to put them in the top four. I even said they’d be battling with Liverpool, so I’ll correct myself and place them in the top four.”
Tottenham’s Summer Transfer Window
Spurs have had a busy summer. They retained and brought back Timo Werner on a season-long loan deal early on. They also signed highly-rated Archie Gray from Leeds United, which could be one of the deals of the summer.
Despite their goal-scoring prowess in Postecoglou’s attacking system, Tottenham continued to strengthen their offense by signing Dominic Solanke for a club-record fee.
While they have the firepower to outscore many teams, Jermaine Jenas remains concerned about unresolved defensive issues, including conceding goals from set-pieces and corners, problems that plagued them last season.
