EFL pundit Adrian Clarke has expressed his ‘concern’ about how the transfer window is unfolding for Leeds United, particularly in light of how difficult it will be to replace Georginio Rutter.
The summer was always expected to be challenging for Leeds following their play-off final loss in May, but the situation has turned out to be worse than anticipated, with Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Rutter all departing.
Leeds’ performance on the pitch has also been underwhelming, as they have yet to secure a win in the Championship and suffered a heavy defeat to Middlesbrough in the League Cup.

As a result, a busy end to the transfer window is anticipated at Elland Road, with manager Daniel Farke eager to strengthen the squad before the deadline. On the ‘What the EFL!?’ podcast, EFL expert Clarke shared his understanding of the fans’ frustrations, particularly regarding the loss of Rutter after his move to Brighton.
“It’s been a disastrous start to the season. Daniel Farke needs wins, and he needs them quickly, along with new signings,” Clarke said. “You can’t enter a season with a squad that’s significantly weaker than last year’s—especially when they didn’t get promoted last season. This is not a good sign for Leeds United.
“I’m not surprised that players have left because they are exceptional talents, but I’m concerned. Where does this end?
“What’s Wilfried Gnonto thinking? He’s been professional since deciding to stay a year ago, but now he’s seen his teammate, who is equally talented, move to the Premier League.
“I believe Rutter is as big a loss as Summerville. He was the link between the midfield and attack, initiating so many attacks by dropping deep, turning, spreading the play wide, and getting into the box.
“While he didn’t score much, he created chaos, and now I’m wondering: where is that chaos going to come from?”

There’s no doubt that replacing Summerville and Rutter will be challenging, and most would agree with Clarke’s assessment that the squad’s quality has diminished.
However, promotion is still within reach, and last season’s 90-point tally was the result of a strong team effort in a highly competitive league.
Still, the Leeds board will likely ask to be judged at the end of the transfer window, with the possibility of adding four new players before the deadline.
These additions could transform the team, even if they don’t replace individuals like Summerville and Rutter. The focus should be on improving the team as a whole.
Ultimately, time will tell how the situation unfolds, but Farke needs support in the transfer market, and it will be his responsibility to get the team functioning effectively, as promotion remains the goal this season.
