Everton, still at the bottom of the table and yet to earn a point this season, experienced a dramatic collapse at Goodison Park. After Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin put them 2-0 up before the hour mark, Sean Dyche’s side surrendered their lead to lose 3-2 to Bournemouth, a result Dyche described as the most frustrating of his career.
Despite Everton initially controlling the game, a decrease in intensity and strategic adjustments from Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola turned the match around. Antoine Semenyo, Lewis Cook, and Luis Sinisterra scored headers from deep crosses, with Sinisterra’s goal coming in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Dyche, who made his first substitution in the 83rd minute while Bournemouth had already made all five of theirs, criticized his team’s failure to maintain their performance. He said, “You have to play for every second of the game. When you dominate so clearly and have so many chances, you need to focus on the basics to secure the win.”
He continued, “After the first goal, I sensed something was wrong. I was shouting for them to fix their shape and focus on the fundamental aspects of the game. We didn’t do that, and they ended up scoring a winner from a basic cross.”
When asked about this defeat compared to others in his career, Dyche said, “I’ve had several tough losses, but this one is the most frustrating. We were in control and didn’t need to take risks, yet we failed to manage the basics of defending.”
