This summer, Sunderland chose to strengthen their goalkeeping squad.
Previously, it seemed they might need a new first-choice goalkeeper due to Anthony Patterson being linked with clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal.
Despite managing to retain the 24-year-old Patterson, Sunderland still opted to expand their goalkeeping options. They signed Simon Moore and Blondy Nna Noukeu on free transfers and explored further options within the EFL.
In April, it was reported that Sunderland had considered Sam Tickle as a potential replacement for Patterson. The 22-year-old had an impressive season with Wigan Athletic, recording 15 clean sheets in 46 games and being named Player of the Year, which attracted considerable interest from the Championship.
Ultimately, Tickle signed a new four-year contract with Wigan, while Sunderland successfully kept hold of their own goalkeeper. Though it’s uncertain if Sunderland would have pursued Tickle had Patterson left, it’s clear they faced stronger competition than initially anticipated. Sunderland might have offered Tickle a more secure spot in their starting lineup compared to Premier League offers.
However, Sunderland is unlikely to regret missing out on Tickle, given Patterson’s continued presence at the club. Patterson has conceded only once in Sunderland’s first four matches, with the lone goal being an own goal by Luke O’Nien. Patterson has had little work, making just ten saves, mostly routine catches.
So far, Patterson’s performance has been smooth, thanks to a solid defensive line. When needed, he is expected to perform well, though his distribution remains the main area of concern.
